A new book of theology by the head of the Vatican’s Apostolic Signature, Cardinal Raymond L Burke, has been publicly endorsed as “a great way to introduce yourself to the teachings of the Church on the Eucharist,” by the papal nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Charles Brown. Speaking in Cork on his first visit to the city since his arrival in Ireland in February, Archbishop Brown urged the Irish faithful to read and engage with Divine Love Made Flesh, which draws from two papal documents on the Eucharist. Knowing that half of the family in attendance was of the Muslim faith I asked the non-ordained ‘funeral assistant’ of the parish to please ask the priest to announce the guidelines for whether or not a person in attendance should receive the Holy Eucharist. From the opening words of this inspirational book it is clear that Cardinal Burke wants the reader to comprehend the most wondrous aspects of the most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist.  He helps us understand why the Eucharist is so important to our faith, being as Pope John Paul II defined it, the “source and summit” of what it means to be Catholic.  But at a more profound level, Cardinal Burke captures the immensity of Christ’s love, poured out on the Cross at Calvary and repeated on the altar as we partake of the most precious body and blood of Our Lord.
